THE RESET: Delay becoming the norm for US gov't

Congress often gives itself more breathing room. In other words, it kicks the can down the road.

It's an overused term nearly everybody scoffs at or denounces. Yet lots of cans litter the road ahead.

The House on Wednesday voted to delay a looming showdown over the government's debt ceiling until May.

"It's not perfect. But perfect may not get passed in this House," said House Rules Committee Chairman Pete Sessions, R-Texas.

Congress and President Barack Obama barely avoided a New Years' Day "fiscal cliff" of mandatory tax increases and spending cuts by scrapping most of the tax hikes and putting off a decision on the spending cuts until March.

The Senate is now weighing a Democratic proposal to put limits on the use of filibusters to delay votes or nominations. Republicans have used the potent tactic to block many Democratic measures ? as Democrats did themselves when they were in the minority

"Some have suggested that one's view of the filibuster depends on where one sits," says House Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

Not only Congress delays things.

Obama last January postponed until after the election acting on a Canada-U.S. oil pipeline opposed by environmentalists. A decision is still pending.

Sometimes there are valid reasons for delay.

On Wednesday, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton gave long-awaited testimony on Capitol Hill on the deadly Sept. 11, 2012, raid on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. She was to appear last month, but illness forced the postponement.

"We have to recognize we're in for a long-term struggle here," Clinton told senators, referring to that volatile part of the world.

The Senate hasn't passed an annual budget in four years.

So House Republicans have proposed withholding pay for either House or Senate members if their respective chamber fails to pass a budget plan.

They're attaching it to the legislation to delay the debt limit.

Boeing reaffirms commitment to zero-carbon growth | Qatar ...

The Boeing Company [NYSE:BA] intends to continue growing its business without increasing its environmental footprint, Kim Smith, Boeing vice president of Environment, Health and Safety, announced today while visiting Qatar and the rest of the region.

Since the start of 2008, Boeing has reduced cumulative carbon dioxide emissions by more than 400,000 metric tons while increasing monthly airplane production by 35 percent, said Smith, Boeing?s leader for environmental sustainability. The CO2 reduction is the equivalent of removing 80,000 cars from the road for one year.

Between 2008 and 2012, Boeing also implemented conservation efforts and successfully reduced water use by more than 2 billion liters ? enough to fill more than 800 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

?Over the next few years, we intend to continue increasing airplane production without expanding our environmental footprint,? Smith said, announcing that Boeing is committing to zero-carbon growth from operations for the period 2013 to 2017.?Boeing also reaffirmed its commitment to help the global airline industry meet its goal of achieving zero-carbon growth after the year 2020. It is estimated that commercial air travel accounts for between 2 and 3 percent of global CO2 emissions.

Kim Smith

To reduce the environmental footprint of aerospace, Boeing is focusing on new technologies including:

  • Light-weight, more-efficient airplanes such as the 787 Dreamliner, the new 747-8 and the 737 MAX ? each of which offer double-digit improvements in fuel economy and carbon emissions compared to the airplanes they replace.
  • Promoting the development and commercialization of sustainable aviation biofuels derived from sea grasses, algae and other substances that don?t compete with food crops for land or water.
  • Modernizing the global air traffic management system, with the potential to reduce the carbon footprint of commercial air travel by 12 percent. It is estimated that reducing the length of the average flight by one minute would reduce annual CO2 emissions by nearly 4.4 metric tons.

?Airlines, research institutions and companies in the region are leaders in developing a cleaner future for the global aviation industry,? Smith said.

?The region?s airlines operate some of the world?s modern, most-fuel efficient fleets of aircraft. They are actively developing cleaner, alternative aviation fuels,? Smith added. ?These airlines are devoted to recycling, conserving water and reducing emissions in their operations. And they are leading participants in international efforts to minimize the environmental footprint of aviation.?

Eagle ID Real Estate Sales Climb in 2012 | Market Statistics

Eagle ID real estate sales in 2012 have gone up compared to 2011.? For example, this past December there were 37 home sales.? In December 2011, there were just 26, a difference of about 30%.? The chart below shows sales for real estate in Eagle Idaho over the past two years.? With a few exceptions, each month in 2012 outperformed sales from the same month in 2011.

Eagle ID Real Estate Sales 2011 vs. 2012

Another change in the Eagle ID real estate market has been the amount of new home sales.? The past six months have been particularly strong, especially October which had 21 new home sales.? That?s an 86% climb from October 2011 when there were just 3 new homes sold.? Similarly, December 2012 saw 11 more new homes sold than December 2011.? Overall there were 113 new homes sold in 2012 and just 58 in 2011.

Eagle ID New Home Sales 2011 vs. 2012

About 24% of the homes sold in the Eagle ID real estate market this past year were new homes.? Their median sold price was $312,000.? The Preserve subdivision saw the most new home sales this past year with 32.

While home sales have gone up, Eagle Idaho foreclosures have gone down.? And while Eagle short sales and bank-owned properties have both slowed from one year ago,? REO sales have declined dramatically.? One prime example is June 2011, when there were 15 bank-owned/HUD properties sold.? In June 2012 there were just 2.? Sales of HUD properties, meanwhile, have become almost negligible in the Eagle ID real estate market.

91% Silver Linings Playbook

All Critics (188) | Top Critics (45) | Fresh (172) | Rotten (16)

It's a rom-com that succeeds in revitalizing that discredited genre where so many others have failed, injecting it with the grit and emotion of realist drama rather than with amped-up whimsy or social satire or montages of people walking on the beach.

Silver Linings Playbook tells us that happily-ever-after may depend on finding people who coexist with our lunacy, not ones who can lead us out of it. In any case, it's crazy good.

A crazy beaut of a comedy that brims with generosity and manages to circumvent predictability at every turn.

An edgy romantic dramedy that suits our anxious times.

This meaningful film keeps the laughs, giddy anxiousness and warm butterflies from the trailer and sustains it all through two full hours of a love story.

Lawrence, in her most high-low, sad-comic turn yet, is remarkable.

Fine mainstream sitcom material.

Writer-director David O. Russell keeps the audience guessing. He takes unexpected twists and turns as if defying you to guess what will come next.

Consistently engaging, funny, and touching. This is the kind of picture in which two hours of running time whiz by in a flash.

Silver Linings Playbook is the best movie of 2012 and the acting is mind-boggling good. Give me the Oscar picks, and it wins in every nominated category.

Succeeds less on the merits of aesthetics than its willingness to give in to crowd-pleasing effervescence.

A quirky, dramatic and totally entertaining movie that features someof the best acting of the year.

Having gone from unknown actress to Oscar nominee to "The Hunger Games" in what seemed like a blink of an eye, Lawrence shows herself a master of timing and plays off Cooper brilliantly.

Silver Linings Playbook doesn't settle for the routine or the clich?. It's a funny drama about imperfect people looking for love. It also happens to be the best romantic comedy in years.

Unique, beguiling, and occasionally frustrating: These descriptions equally apply to Silver Linings Playbook and its two central characters.

Russell keeps the outcome interesting; he knows that every silver lining has a cloud.

A feel-good film filled with laughs and memorable performances, David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook leaves you so ecstatically happy that it might just be the most recommendable movie of 2012.

The plot is clever and a bit unconventional. Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro all turn in wonderful performances in this very funny, very warm comedy.

During its rocky road to becoming a fractured love story, Silver Linings Playbook and its great ensemble cast run a funny, conflict-mined, even suspenseful path. It's a total winner.

Unlike the usual run-of-the-mill rom-com, this film bristles with life from the central core of the love story, to the quirky band of supporting players who add to the fun.

With "The Silver Linings Playbook," Russell picks up the traditional quirky rom-com genre and shakes it around, just to see what happens. Where it's going is fairly predictable; how it gets there isn't.

A delightfully dysfunctional romantic comedy that's moving, funny and features just the right amount of crazy love.

A tenderhearted tale about two terribly wounded souls who survive by grudgingly leaning on each other's shoulder.

A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose | Self Help in You

216 of 229 people found the following review helpful

Back in 2000 I read Tolle?s ?The Power of Now? (TPON), and thought so highly of it that I included it in the ?Must Read? list at the end of my own book. As such, I figured ?A New Earth? just might be as valuable to me as TPON was at that time.

I read this book over a weekend and my first impression was that it was a solid effort, and that it was essentially a hybrid of TPON, with the primary difference being that it?s written in a prose as opposed to a Q&A format. The fact that it?s similar to TPON isn?t necessarily a negative, for that book had some very valuable content in it that?s clearly worth hearing again.

Is it a life changing work? Well, the truth is it all depends on YOU. If you?re considering buying it because Oprah recommends it, but you haven?t read a single book in the spiritual growth/personal growth category in the past, then my sense is that you might become a bit frustrated with its esoteric nature. A better choice as a first book might be ?The Four Agreements? by Don Miguel Ruiz, as he likewise addresses the power of the mind to overtake us if we don?t learn to cultivate the ability to step back from its ramblings. A book I read recently that would also be a wonderful first title to read in the category is called ?The Belief Formula? by Pete Koerner, as it talks in detail about thoughts and provides practical ways to get more in control of them. This book would be of particular benefit to anyone who would like a bridge from traditional religious training to the more mystical teachings of authors like Eckhart Tolle.

If, on the other hand, you are a person who has read a few to several books in this category, then ?A New Earth? is another quality title to read as you continue to walk your path of self-discovery. If you?ve already read TPON by Tolle, as noted above you?ll notice some obvious similarity between the two books, but this book does have some new content that is certainly worth reading.

One thing I didn?t like is that the book?s subheading, (i.e., Awakening to Your Life?s Purpose) suggests that this topic is a major point of discussion throughout the book, but actually it?s not. The whole idea of ?life purpose? isn?t addressed in any significant way until chapter nine of a 10 chapter book. And, when it is talked about, it?s not by any means a primer on how to identify your purpose in this life from a worldly point of view (what you are to do while you are here). Note that Tolle?s discussion about purpose is on a much deeper, mystical level.

As a final point, before buying this book I took the time to read a broad cross-section of reviews about it on Amazon.com (from 1 star to 5 stars). One thing I did find troubling in some of the negative reviews was the Oprah bashing that some chose to do. People who think that her sole motivation for getting behind this book so aggressively was to create yet another financial windfall, or to establish some sort of new religion are, in my view, sorely mistaken. Anyone can see that she really does care about the world, and is committed to doing something to raise global consciousness. What?s so wrong with that? If you don?t like what she?s doing then don?t buy the book.

Help other customers find the most helpful reviews?

Clinton, Carter join Obama inaugural gathering

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Former presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter joined lawmakers and other dignitaries at the Capitol for President Barack Obama's ceremonial swearing-in Monday to a second term.

The two men are the only living Democrats who have occupied the White House. Clinton was accompanied by his wife, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who is departing as Obama's second term gets under way.

Former first lady Rosalynn Carter accompanied her husband for the ceremonies at the Capitol's West front.

Neither former President George W. Bush nor his father, former President George H.W. Bush, were expected to attend. Both are Republicans.

The elder Bush was recently released from the hospital, where he was treated for bronchitis and other issues.
