Toshiba unveils U925t Ultrabook with slide-out touchscreen, keeps the price a secret for now

DNP EMBARGO Toshiba unveils U925t Ultrabook with slideout touchscreen, keeps the price a secret for now

If Computex was a coming out party for Windows 8 Ultrabooks, Toshiba was one of the wallflowers: though the company teased some concept devices, it only let journalists photograph them from certain angles, and with their screens turned off. Now, though, we're closing the summer with yet another tradeshow, and Toshiba is using the occasion to demo its wares in more detail. The company just announced the Satellite U925t, that Windows 8 slider we showed you earlier in the summer. No word on price, except that it's expected to be "slightly north" of the Satellite U845W, which starts at $1,000. We do know that it will ship on October 26th, the day Win 8 formally launches.

In the meantime, Toshiba hasn't left any specs to the imagination. What we have here is a 12.5-inch Ultrabook with a slide-out, Gorilla Glass touchscreen. Pushing the screen up reveals a built-in keyboard, and we were pleasantly surprised in our hands-on to find that it's actually quite spacious. (With this form factor, the propped up display usually cuts into the usable keyboard space.) The keys are also backlit, and have the same feel as what you'll find on Toshiba's U845 and U845W Ultrabooks. That is to say they're shallow, and very, very quiet. The whole package weighs "just over three pounds" and measures about 0.8 inches thick, making it easy enough to stuff in a carry-on.

When you push up the display you'll also find another surprise: an autofocusing camera on the back side. For good measure, there's also a lower-res shooter up front. On the inside, it packs a Core i5 processor, Intel HD 4000 graphics and a 128GB SSD. Like many other Ultrabooks, it also has Intel's Wireless Display tech on board, though you'll of course have to buy the requisite set-top box separately. Taking a tour around the device, you'll find a mix of tablet- and laptop-style trappings: two USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, vents, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a volume rocker and a button for turning off screen auto-rotation.

Software-wise, Toshiba is bundling Desktop Assist, a utility designed to give Windows 8 newbies quick access to files, programs and the like. You'll also see Live Tiles for things like Toshiba Central (a support hub), Book Place and Toshiba App Place. That's all she wrote for now, but expect us to follow up closer to October 26th with a more specific price. Until then, we've got hands-on photos below, along with a short walk-through video.

Investing on the stock market: Where should you put your money ...

For only the first opening one minute of trading at the Uganda?Securities Exchange (USE), does the atmosphere and noise made?by stock brokers, offer the feeling of an active stock market.?What happens after the one minute opening? For the next two?hours, trading is a series of a few trading deals often about once?an hour.?More significantly is the fact that by close of trading, some few?brokers have either given up or are not optimistic about any?other deals. They just seem to be hanging around, waiting for the?closing bell to ring.
Over the last three years, the index of all locally listed companies?has mostly been in the red, due to limited activity on the USE.

USE CEO Joseph Kitamirike

Once in a while the index will casually tip the green, riding on the?good performance of Uganda Clays?(UCL), Stanbic Bank (SBU) and?Bank of Baroda (BOBU) counters.?Notably, trading between January?and June 2012 has generated?about Ushs9.8bn compared to?Ushs14.9bn in the final half of?2011 and Ushs25bn in the first six?months of 2011.?Despite this slump, there are?investors who are swooping on?some shares and others who are?letting go.

With the loud silence?that beckons at the bourse, for?some investors this is probably the?best time to buy.?Question is, where do you put your money and why???Banking stocks (particularly Baroda and Stanbic) are looking?cheap and are always good stocks to buy for the medium to long?term investor,? Keith Kalyegira, the chief executive officer of First?Renaissance, an investment advisory firm, said.

?The challenge seems to be supply of securities ?those who have?stocks are not selling which is bound to put upward pressure on?prices in the short term.??Late last month, Stanbic Bank Uganda started trading at Ushs25?after bonus shares finally made their way to the trading floor.?Investors in Uganda?s largest bank were given 4 shares for 1 which?saw the price drop from Ushs110 to Ushs25.?Research analysts on the exchange point out that for a bank that?posted a profit of Ushs121bn last year, a lower price will attract?more demand.

The price is expected to at least peak at Ushs50 by?next year.?However like Kalyegira says, market analysts take note of the?limited supply of the SBU shares. ?Demand is up because of the?low share price, but supply remains low due to hesitation by?some investors,? says Kalyegira.?Bank of Baroda Uganda (BOBU) is currently trading at between?Ushs190 and Ushs200, making its shares the second lowest?priced of all the listed banks on the exchange.?After posting a profit of Ushs26.7bn in 2011, the bank is?considered to have an attractive price for new buyers; however?there is noticeable limited supply of shares on this counter.??For the medium term investor, banks are the best option?considering that they are too cheap to buy at the moment,??Arthur Nsiko, a research analyst at African Alliance says.

He however predicts that the banking sector?s performance in?2012 will not be as good this year?as the tight monetary policy stance?Bank of Uganda has employed to?reign in high inflation over the last?12 months takes its effects.?British American Tobacco (BATU)?saw a profit surge of 22 percent?at the end of last year after a?reported net profit of Ushs22bn.?Investors received Ushs450 per?share, the highest dividend payout?by the company.??For an investor looking for quick?cash flow, this is the best option?because of its high dividends of?all the locally listed companies,? African Alliances? Nsiko says,??The challenge though is that there is limited liquidity on the BAT?counter.??The pick for the long term investor has been considered to be?Uganda Clays, since it is recovering from a huge debt burden of?about Ushs12bn.

Uganda Clays has had the lowest price per share for the last three?years. Currently trading between Ushs35 and Ushs40, the clay?products maker has always managed to trade actively mainly?because of the low price.?Investors in the company have not seen a dividend for the last?five years due to losses arising from huge debt obligations. At the?end of last year, the company reported a profit of Ushs604m but?once again no dividend was recommended.??It is for long term investors since real estate is still a growing?sector. UCL is currently recovering from the debt obligations and?doing better than it did in 2009 and 2010,? Nsiko notes.

National Insurance Corporation (NIC), the last company to do?an IPO has suffered from unresolved issues with Makerere?University over claims of about Ushs15bn and its suspension from?the bourse over the delayed release of their financials in 2011,?dumped investor confidence.?Investors bought shares at Ushs45 (IPO price), and by May 2011,?the price was between Ushs65 and Ushs70.?However, the uncertainty that followed has dragged the price?down to Ushs40. Despite the company posting profits of?Ushs12.89bn in 2011, the price has kept between UShs35 and?Ushs45.??Whoever is looking at the long term can also consider NIC. Its?share price is likely to remain in the range of Ushs35 to Ushs45,??says Robert Katabaire, a research analyst from Dyer and Blair?Investment Bank Uganda.

?The question is whether the demand on this counter can be?sustained, to drive the price upwards,? he adds.?Trading at Ushs620, the New Vision Company Limited (NVL)?has had price stability on the exchange. At the end of 2011,?the company posted profits of Ushs1.7bn and demand on this?counter has been subdued for the second quarter of 2012.??The New Vision Group is profitable having allocated a dividend?of between Ushs16 and Ushs15 per share,? he notes ?however?this amount may not be that significant for an investor, so this?looks like more of a long term investment,? Katabaire points out.??Its share price is also likely to decline even to at least Ushs400?before rebounding again to a high of Ushs1000 if last year?s?trends are to be followed.?

Market analysts from various brokerage firms admit that there is?a slowdown in trade, and this ultimately causes financial stress.??Liquidity on this market is very challenging,? notes one from?Baroda Capital Markets, however, ?the corporate action like we?have seen from Stanbic Bank (the bonus issue) will keep the?market active,? Nsiko from African Alliance adds.?Market analysts also signal tough times ahead unless the?regulator is able to bring on another IPO. Uganda?s last IPO was?NIC in 2010 and last year, investor confidence in the insurer was?dampened heavily after it was suspended from the market for?failure to comply with trading rules.

In essence, two IPOs have been in the works if conversation heard?in the corridors of the USE are to be believed, but nothing has?been confirmed yet.?The UMEME IPO is hugely anticipated, however with the tightlipped?sources at the USE, the Capital Markets Authority (CMA)?and Actis (Umeme?s shareholders), the wait is on for the share?price and number of shares to be floated.?Other expected IPOs whose ?dates are yet to be confirmed are Crane?Bank and Tullow Oil.?Without the market rebounding fast enough, Uganda?s fourteen?year old stock exchange still has a long way to go before it?transforms into what it is meant to be.

From Sickness to Wellness to FITNESS ... - Lifestyle for Health

For years I thought that ?not being sick? meant I was healthy.? Then I learned that a lack of symptoms?didn?t?mean I was healthy at all!? In fact I actually had a lot of symptoms of poor health but had no way of recognizing it.

I was often tired, didn?t sleep, and had emotional meltdowns and brain fog.? Those symptoms were so ?normal? for me that I had no clue they indicated adrenal fatigue.? From that simple beginning I spent almost 20 years restoring my health with an organic diet, lots of pure water and a whole lot of quality supplementation.

I did cleanses and worked with chiropractors, wholistic dentists, and massage therapists to continue to build my health.? I had great cholesterol, blood pressure and other ?scores.?? I had built health but not FITNESS!? I still do all of those things.

It was when I turned 50 that I began to get the insight that health doesn?t necessarily mean FITNESS!? I might have been healthy, but I got winded walking up stairs.? I couldn?t walk on the beach due to poor balance and I couldn?t lift my luggage into the overhead rack on an airplane.

That was when I knew I had to start moving and exercising.? The next seven years I pursued exercising with a single focus expecting all of the results to just fall into place.? I did lose weight, but not body fat.? I could do more in some areas, but would still not call myself FIT!

18 months ago I was introduced to The Body by Vi 90 Day Challenge.? Yes, I love the shake and the products (I?ve dropped 15% body fat and added 5% lean muscle ? - so that is awesome).? But far more important has been the result of my 90 Day Challenges.? (Note the plural ? it is now a lifestyle!)

My 1st Challenge was to lean down and I did go down about 2 jean sizes.

My 2nd Challenge was to muscle up and I increased my workouts with my trainer to twice a week and I dropped another 2 jean sizes and began to see some muscle definition.

My 3rd Challenge was a Kickboxing Video and sparring in the ring with a 2-time world champion!? Now that rocked me totally out of my comfort zone.? Yet it became so much fun!

My 4th?Challenge was to race my first 10K (Bolder Boulder) and do 9,000 pushups.? I did the 10K and was not even winded!? I also did 10,000 pushups (a much nicer number, don?t you think?).? It amazed even me.

My 5th Challenge is to create ?Marine Muscles?.? I?m working with a former Marine who has given me a game plan I can do at home or on the road.? It has great clarity and I?m excited to realize I can do it and I can still balance my life and schedule.

Truly the 90 Day Challenge is more than a shake ? - ? it is a lifestyle that is getting me FIT at 59 and giving me a quality of life I never had when I pursued only health or weight loss.

Isn?t it time for YOU to get FIT and join me on your 90 Day Challenge?

This undated file photo shows al Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, in Afghanistan. A firsthand account of the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden contradicts previous accounts by administration officials, raising questions as to whether the terror mastermind presented a clear threat when SEALs first fired upon him. (AP Photo)

(AP) ? A Navy SEAL's firsthand account of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden pulls back the veil on the secret operations conducted almost nightly by elite American forces against terrorist suspects.

Former SEAL Matt Bissonnette's account contradicted in key details the account of the raid presented by administration officials in the days after the May 2011 raid in Abbotabad, Pakistan, that killed the al-Qaida leader, and raised questions about whether the SEALs followed to the letter the order to only use deadly force if they deemed him a threat.

Bissonnette wrote that the SEALs spotted bin Laden at the top of a darkened hallway and shot him in the head even though they could not tell whether he was armed. Administration officials have described the SEALs shooting bin Laden only after he ducked back into a bedroom because they assumed he might be reaching for a weapon.

Military experts said Wednesday that if Bissonnette's recollection is accurate, the SEALS made the right call to open fire on the terrorist mastermind who had plenty of time to reach for a weapon or explosives as they made their way up to the third level of the house where he hid.

Bissonnette wrote the book, "No Easy Day," under the pseudonym Mark Owen as one of the men in the room when they killed bin Laden. The book is to be published next week by Penguin Group (USA)'s Dutton imprint. The Associated Press purchased a copy Tuesday.

For years, the primary weapon in the war on terror has been unmanned drones firing missiles from the sky. But the Bissonnette book reveals a more bloody war waged by special operators, one the public almost never gets to see close up.

The book offers intimate details of a special operations mission. The most memorable scenes are also the most human moments. Bissonnette describes one of the SEALs dressing the wounds of a woman who was shot when she lunged toward the SEALs. In another scene, a terrified mother clutches her child and a young girl identifies the dead man as Osama bin Laden, seemingly unaware of the significance of those words.

In that regard, the bin Laden raid seems destined to become an anachronism. Nearly every top al-Qaida figure killed by the United States since the 9/11 attacks has died in a remote-controlled strike by unmanned drone aircraft ? their deaths seen back in Washington via high-definition video. An estimated 80 top terrorist leaders have been killed in places like Pakistan and Yemen, according to The Long War Journal.com, which tracks such airborne strikes.

Special operations troops often conduct raids similar to the bin Laden strike a dozen times a night in Afghanistan, and previously in Iraq, killing thousands of mostly mid- and lower-level terrorists. It's all part of a war on terror that is winding down and giving way to the drone war outside traditional war zones, given the scheduled drawdown of most U.S. troops in Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

"No Easy Day" shows how routine such operations have become. But the public rarely hears about them unless the target is as historic as bin Laden.

The SEALS, according to Bissonnette's description, were prepared as they had been in other raids for a gunfight in close quarters, which likely would last only a few seconds, with no margin for error. By the time the SEALs reached the top floor of bin Laden's compound, roughly 15 minutes had passed, giving the terror leader adequate time to strap on a suicide vest or get a gun, he said.

Bissonnette says he was directly behind a point man going up the stairs in the pitch black hallway. Near the top, he said, he heard two silenced shots fired by the first SEAL into the hallway. He wrote that the point man had seen a man peeking out of a door on the right side of the hallway, but Bissonnette could not tell from his vantage point whether the bullets hit the target.

The author writes that the man ducked back into his bedroom and the SEALs followed, only to find him crumpled on the floor in a pool of blood with a hole visible on the right side of his head and two women wailing over his body. Once they wiped the blood off his face, they were convinced it was bin Laden.

Bissonnette says the point man pulled the two women out of the way and shoved them into a corner. He and the other SEALs trained their guns' laser sights on bin Laden's still-twitching body, shooting him several times until he lay motionless.

The SEALs later found two weapons stored by the doorway, untouched, the author said.

National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor late Tuesday would not comment on the apparent contradiction between the administration's account and the book's version.

Bissonnette writes that during a pre-raid briefing, an administration lawyer told them that they were not on an assassination mission. According to Bissonnette, the lawyer said if bin Laden did not pose a threat, they should detain him.

"If they didn't feel like there was a threat, they would have captured him," co-author Kevin Maurer told the AP on Wednesday. "But from when they first hit the ground, all the way until they got to the third deck, they had encountered armed men, which made the use of force essential," said Maurer, a former AP reporter.

A former deputy judge advocate general for the Air Force defended the decision to shoot the man the SEALs saw in the hallway.

"In a confined space like that where it is clear that there are hostiles, the SEALs need to take reasonable steps to ensure their safety and accomplish the mission," said the former JAG, ret. Maj. Gen. Charlie Dunlap, who now teaches at Duke University law school.

The Pentagon and the CIA, which commanded the mission, are examining the manuscript for possible disclosure of classified information, and could take legal action against Bissonnette.

In a statement provided to the AP, the SEAL author says he did "not disclose confidential or sensitive information that would compromise national security in any way."

The book does include information not previously reported about specific CIA officers' involvement in the raid.

Bissonnette's real name was first revealed by Fox News and confirmed to the AP.

Jihadists on al-Qaida websites have posted purported photos of the author, calling for his murder.

Democratic super PAC ad tries to undercut Romney

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A Democratic super PAC supporting President Barack Obama is releasing a new TV ad that aims to undermine Republican Mitt Romney's appeal to middle-class workers as Republicans gather for their convention in Tampa, Fla.

The ad by Priorities USA Action features a Massachusetts small-business owner who voted for Romney in 2002 but now says she feels "duped" by the former Massachusetts governor. The ad is airing in Florida during the GOP convention and criticizes the level of job growth in Massachusetts under Romney's watch.

Romney spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg called the ad a distraction from Obama's record. She said the Republican campaign was "happy to compare the 4.7 percent unemployment rate Mitt Romney achieved with President Obama's record of 42 straight months of unemployment above 8 percent any day."

The super PAC says the ad is part of a new $30 million project that will focus on how the Republican ticket's proposals would affect the middle class. It will air in Florida, Colorado, Iowa, Ohio and Virginia.

Denny Hamlin picks up 1st Bristol victory

BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) ? They bumped, they banged and a helmet was tossed, too.

It was just like old times Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway, where tempers flared again much to the delight of track owner Bruton Smith.

Denny Hamlin didn't mind, either. He used an old-school "slide job" to make a late pass for the lead that led to his first career Bristol win. More important, the victory was the third of the season for Hamlin and moved him into a four-way tie for the top seed in NASCAR's championship race.

"You struggle to say what it means because I grew up watching this race and all the great finishes," Hamlin said. "This is just a milestone race that you always want to win. They've got one of the best trophies of all tracks and it's going to be one of my prized possessions and it's obviously my biggest win."

Hamlin flirted with Carl Edwards for the lead late in the race, and set up the move with 39 laps remaining Saturday night. Hamlin slid his way past Edwards on a track that was ground this summer by Smith in an effort to bring back excitement.

Edwards tried but failed to use a cross-over move to get back in front, and Hamlin drove away to the win.

"That's what you had to do. The only thing you could do was slide-job somebody," Hamlin said of the pass. "Bruton ground the track, but you still had the old Bristol here. It's one line, you still had to knock somebody out of the way to make a move."

There's two races left before the field is reset for the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship, and seeding is done by "regular-season" wins. Hamlin is tied for the series victory lead with defending champion Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson and Brad Keselowski.

The four would be tied for the top seed right now, but all want at least one more win to break the logjam.

"We're not done winning yet. We've still got a few more to go," Hamlin promised.

Johnson finished second and clinched a berth in the Chase, as did Greg Biffle and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Matt Kenseth clinched at least a wild-card berth.

Jeff Gordon was third ? giving Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet's second and third ? followed by Brian Vickers in a Toyota and Marcos Ambrose in a Ford.

Kyle Busch was a quiet sixth, Clint Bowyer was seventh and Joey Logano, winner of the Nationwide Series race Friday night, was eighth. Kasey Kahne and Paul Menard rounded out the top 10. Edwards ended up 22nd.

The race was the first since Smith ordered a grinding of the top groove around the track in an effort to narrow the racing surface. His goal was to bring back bumping and banging to Bristol after several consecutive disappointing crowds.

Although the race wasn't a sellout, Hamlin noted "this is the biggest crowd I've seen here in forever."

But it created many unknowns as few were sure how the race would develop.

Asked Friday when it would become evident what the track changes had accomplished, Stewart mockingly said "exactly on lap 236. Not a lap before, not a lap after."

He was off by about 100 laps.

Stewart rallied from a lap down early in the race to put himself in position to challenge for the lead, but he ran out of track while running with Kenseth and the two cars collided. The damage briefly knocked Stewart out of the race and sent Kenseth to pit road for repairs.

Stewart then showed his displeasure with Kenseth with a two-handed toss of his helmet directly into the front grill of Kenseth's car. Stewart put all the blame squarely on Kenseth immediately after the accident, vowing to "run over him every chance I get for the rest of the year."

As for the helmet collected by NASCAR officials on pit road? "The hell with the helmet," he said.

Kenseth was confused with Stewart's anger, claiming he gave Stewart room earlier to avoid a wreck and Stewart didn't do the same.

"I guess he just wanted to do all the taking, so that's where we ended up," Kenseth said, adding the two had incidents this season at Sonoma and Indianapolis, and Stewart refused to speak to him about the Indy accident.

"I just said 'OK, that's fine. I'm just going to race you the same way you race me,'" Kenseth said.

As for Stewart's threat to wreck Kenseth the rest of the year, Kenseth didn't seem concerned.

"Look, Tony is probably the greatest race car driver in the garage. I don't really have anything bad to say about Tony," Kenseth said, adding he was expecting the helmet throw.

It briefly appeared that there would be two helmet throws during the race as Danica Patrick prepared her reaction following a wreck with Regan Smith. Patrick, who struggled mightily in Friday's two practice sessions, had climbed to 19th on the board and was on the lead lap when her night ended.

As she approached the track on foot, drivers called for her to throw her helmet at Smith. Alas, Patrick just wagged her finger at Smith as he circled passed.

"We were just racing hard, this is Bristol, this is why people love this track because you see a lot of that, you see tempers flare," Patrick said.

She's right. It's not wrecks that fans missed at Bristol, but they for sure pined for the angry explosions that racing around the tight bullring seemed to create. Drivers had mellowed the last several years at Bristol, and Smith figured narrowing the track surface would bring back the bumping and banging that put fans in the seats.

The drivers almost unanimously opposed any changes, but their protests were ignored as Smith moved forward with the grinding project.

Keselowski, the winner of the previous two Cup races at Bristol, was critical of the track after a wreck sent his car behind the wall for repairs.

"I know the goal was to make a one-groove race track so there'd be more action, but it had an inverse affect to where now everybody is running up against the wall," Keselowski said.

But Gordon, a five-time Bristol winner, thought the track was in terrific shape.

"I say they grind the whole place. It was awesome," he said. "It reminded me of old-school Bristol."

Brain Cancer Research in Seattle Leads to New Treatment Options ...

/PRNewswire-USNewswire/ ??Since its opening in 2008, the Ben Catherine Ivy Center for Advanced Brain Tumor Treatment (the Ivy Center) at Swedish Medical Center?s Neuroscience Institute has led the expansion drive of major research projects and expanded treatment options for patients living with brain cancer in the Pacific Northwest and throughout the world.? The Ivy Center was founded in 2008 to create a world-class treatment and research facility focused on delivering excellent patient care and advancing progress toward more effective treatments for brain cancer.

While great strides have been made in the treatment of breast, colon and other common cancers, only three new drugs to treat brain cancer have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in the past 35 years, and these drugs prolong the lives of patients by only a few months. Such a center was needed at the time, said Greg Foltz, M.D., a neurosurgeon and director of the Ivy Center, because brain cancer had been for far too long a neglected or ?orphan? disease.

In fact, today the life expectancy of a person diagnosed with glioblastoma, the most common form of malignant primary brain cancer, is only about 15 months ? only slightly better than it was a century ago, Dr. Foltz said. ?We felt we needed to focus our efforts on ??coming up with better treatment options,? said Dr. Foltz. ?We felt someone had to champion this cause so we embarked on a mission to get more researchers and physicians focused on this disease. And we did.?

Today, the Ivy Center at Swedish has partnered with and led major brain cancer programs with the Ben Catherine Ivy Foundation, Institute for Systems Biology, Allen Institute for Brain Science, University of Washington, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Accium Biosciences and The Elliott Foundation. This has led to a variety of new brain cancer treatment options and research programs for people living with brain cancer in our region. ?Previously, none of this existed,? said Dr. Foltz.

Five Years of Progress Made

The goal of the Ivy Center was to create a place where brain tumor patients and their families would have access to the best care and latest clinical research. The Ivy Center has achieved this making it possible for the center?s neurosurgeons, oncologists, radiologists and nursing staff to work in close collaboration with the program?s team of scientists. ?This collaboration allows clinicians and scientists to provide patients with the best of care as well as direct access to promising new therapies and clinical trials.

The Ivy Center?s clinical team provides comprehensive, integrated care that includes the latest neurosurgery techniques and technology, including intra-operative MRI-guided navigation, precision Gamma Knife radiosurgery as well as the support of a team of physical and occupational therapists, counselors, and other specialists who provide each patient with comprehensive, personalized care.

?People with brain cancer have needs that transcend the traditional requirements of most patients. Care is not just about an operation, it?s not just about a medication,? said Dr. Foltz. ?Brain cancer is a life-changing event, so it?s very important from the first meeting that these patients know that we?re there for them, that we care deeply about them and we?re going to provide all the resources that are possible to help them fight their disease.?

Holly Zimmerman, a Bellevue, Wash. resident who has been battling brain cancer and is leading a team in this year?s Seattle Brain Cancer Walk, can speak personally to the importance of the first meeting. ?A small seizure led doctors to the discovery of a tumor in my parietal lobe?what immediately followed was brain surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and a very scary prognosis for me and my family,? said Zimmerman. ?This disease is unique and it takes an extraordinary team of medical professionals to conquer it. As a one-year survivor of brain cancer, I have great hopes.?

New Strategies in the Search for a Brain Cancer Cure

Over the past five years the Ivy Center has established an international reputation for its expertise in the genetic analysis of individual tumors. At the Ivy Center, a genetic profile is created of every patient?s tumor with the goal to identify each tumor?s individual weaknesses and to develop new, personalized treatment strategies that target these weaknesses.

The Ivy Center?s genomic database ? now one of the largest brain tumor research projects in the country ? was developed in collaboration with the world-renowned Institute for Systems Biology. This collaboration brings together physicians and scientists in the fields of neurosurgery, neuropathology, systems biology, genomics and biostatistical analysis. Together they are determining how networks of genes and proteins interact in brain cancer to discover new targets for diagnostic tests and treatments.

In another partnership, the Ivy Center and the Allen Institute for Brain Science are creating a 3-D map of gene activity within brain tumors. ?These maps can then be compared with maps of gene activity in normal brain tissue to identify which genes are malfunctioning in the cancer tissue. Once these genes are identified the goal is to develop diagnostics and treatments that target these malfunctioning genes.

All data from these projects are being made available online to researchers around the world for free.

Clinical Trials for Brain Cancer Patients Brought to the Pacific Northwest

The Ivy Center?s expertise in the genetic analysis of brain tumors has led to its participation in a number of groundbreaking clinical trials:

  • Toca 511 Trial: The Ivy Center team is one of only eight sites in the country participating in the Toca trial. In this trial, a genetically engineered virus is used to insert a gene into glioblastoma cells. The gene produces a protein that activates a chemotherapy drug. Because the virus only inserts the gene into cancerous cells, the drug will only harm tumor cells. This approach allows high doses of the lethal drug to accumulate in the tumor cells, while sparing healthy cells nearby.
  • Temozolomide Trial: In this trial the Ivy Center team is leading a trial with the Seattle biotechnology company Accium Biosciences.? In the study, researchers use Accium?s 15-ton particle accelerator to analyze tumor tissue to determine precisely just how much of the chemotherapy drug temozolomide reaches its target. This information will help determine which patients are most likely to benefit from the drug and which patients should try a different treatment.? By using this new approach, it is hoped doctors will be able to better optimize brain cancer therapy so that they deliver the right drug to the right patient at the right dose.
  • DCVax Brain Cancer Vaccine Trial: In this groundbreaking study, a cancer vaccine is being used to train patients? immune systems to attack and kill their brain cancer cells. Once trained, it is hoped these immune cells will track down and destroy any brain cancer cells that remain after surgery and to be ready to fight off any new tumor cells should the cancer recur.

Building a Community for Care and a Cure

Finally, since its founding the Ivy Center has made community involvement a high priority. The center?s community outreach efforts range from involving as many patients as possible in research to develop new treatments, to building community support for patients and their families to help them cope with the disease, to enlisting the community in fundraising and education efforts.

The Ivy Center was established with a lead gift from Ben Catherine Ivy, and $11 million in philanthropic funds have been raised in support of the Center thus far. As a nonprofit, the Ivy Center depends heavily on community support to fund new research initiatives and patient participation in clinical trials, which is often not covered by insurance.

?We are never going to find more effective treatments for brain cancer without the help of the community,? said Dr. Foltz.

A highlight of these efforts is the Seattle Brain Cancer Walk, which has become a popular annual event that now draws thousands of participants and has raised more than $1.8 million for brain cancer research, care and advocacy.

Proceeds from Seattle?s Brain Cancer Walk have supported the Pacific Northwest region?s most promising brain cancer research projects as well as programs and services that benefit brain cancer patients, including clinical trials, advocacy programs, as well as comprehensive patient care and support services in the Pacific Northwest.

Over the past five years, the Ivy Center?s team of health providers and researchers has made real progress in understanding brain cancer and its treatment, said Dr. Foltz. ?I am very hopeful that in the near term ? we?re not talking decades ? but in the next three to five years that we will see new therapies that will significantly help these patients,? Dr. Foltz said.

PFT: Ravens rookie fined $15,760 for hit on Hill

Kenny BrittAP

Receiver Kenny Britt may not be worried about whether he gets suspended by Commissioner Roger Goodell, but Britt?s employer is.

The Tennessee Titans have roster decisions to make, and they need to know whether Britt will be among the 53 players available to suit up and play.? As a result, John Glennon of the Tennessean reports that the Titans expect to hear something before August 31, the date on which the rosters must drop from 75 to 53.

?That will be something that about a week from now, we?ll know more,? coach Mike Munchak said Friday.

As we recently explained, a suspension would trigger an appeal period.? Britt would have three business days under the personal-conduct policy to initiate the process.? If suspended under the substance-abuse policy, Britt would have five days to appeal.? Then, a hearing would have to be scheduled and conducted and a decision would have to be made.? So even if Britt gets a suspension letter this week, there won?t be much of an opportunity to get the process concluded before Week One, when the Patriots come to town.

While Britt remains on the Physically Unable to Perform list due to a torn ACL that occurred last September, the team has said that he could participate in 10-to-15 snaps in the first regular-season game.

The delay possibly arises from the fact that the NFL doesn?t quite know what to do with Britt.? On one hand, his July DUI arrest was his eighth incident in three years.? On the other hand, it was his first DUI ? and the substance-abuse policy plainly states that the ordinary punishment for a first-offense DUI is a two-game fine, after the case is resolved with some attachment of guilt to the player.

Thus, any effort to suspend Britt via a straw-that-broke-the-camel?s-back theory under the personal-conduct policy would be undermined by the reality that the straw that is breaking the camera?s back doesn?t even fall within the confines of the personal-conduct policy.? Which means that the NFL could be inviting another lawsuit if the NFL tries to suspend Britt under the personal-conduct policy for something that falls under the substance-abuse policy.

Either way, it?s going to be difficult to finalize a suspension by Week One.? So when making their final roster cuts, the Titans should assume that, at least for the first game of the regular season, one of the 53-man roster spots will be devoted to Britt.

markconsueloss: Self Improvement & Memory Training: How to ...

Dreams

Dreams can be a means to self-or spiritual development, as they are an easy way of receiving information on aspects of our personality that need further work. We also read in sacred scriptures that angels can appear to us in dreams. They can therefore also be a source of guidance.

Keep a dream journal

Keeping a dream-journal is a valuable tool in remembering your dreams, as they usually fade very quickly. You will discover that if you write the details of your dreams down immediately after you wake, your process of recall will become easier. The journal also helps you to provide structure to your work of interpreting the dream.

The structure of dreams

Dreams are assembled in your subconscious. When you dream, your subconscious is communicating with you by presenting symbolic images in a dramatised and metaphorical form. Being able to record your own 'language' of dream-images in a journal will therefore help you interpret your dreams as well as any other visions you may encounter during your spiritual work.

Some dream-images are quite common, as our symbolic processes are the same. However, their meaning usually differs as a result of each person's unique background and past experiences. I will therefore be supplying you with basic rules and guidelines to help you explore and interpret your own exciting and enigmatic world of dreams.

The dimensions of your dream

The way your dream is put together is very important as it contains elements or clues to its meaning hidden within its context, structure, form and composition. It also uses your present view of the world and framework of concepts, beliefs and ideas. There are a number of different dimensions or levels in your dreams, each having its own set of symbols and meanings.

The background in your dream

For instance, the background always suggests the context or theme of the message. Try to recall if your dream was light or dark and involved a natural scene or buildings of some sort. What you see as the background is only a clue to the underlying theme of the dream and should not be taken literally. For instance, the sea is often considered a metaphor for the ebb and flow of everyday life, with tides flowing in and out as events unfold. A dream playing out against the backdrop of the sea would probably suggest a problem or situation arising in your normal day-to-day life which requires attention. Likewise, a dream-scene taking place in a desert (which is usually desolate), may suggest a situation in which you feel isolated and alone and are seeking assistance. A dream playing out in semi-darkness may indicate that you are in a crisis (having trouble seeing your way forward). The idea is find a connection between the background of your dream and your present circumstances, needs or state of mind, by looking at the symbolism involved.

Your immediate surroundings

Once you have jotted down the background details, the next important step is to remember the immediate surroundings in your dream. This will provide you with more information on your present situation and state of mind as well as your outlook on the world. For instance, in 'looking out' onto the world, you would normally use the windows of your home or office. And in your dream, any building in which you find yourself would be a metaphor for 'where you are' at the moment. Try to recall the characteristics of the structure, as these can usually be related to your current situation or world-view. For example, a 'small' window could suggest your having a limited outlook on life. A dark and damp building could relate to your being in an unpleasant situation or having a negative view of the world. And a building or house in shambles could suggest that your present situation, state of mind or outlook, is chaotic.

The activities in your dreams

Moving away from the immediate surroundings in your dream, focus on the activity which took place. The type of drama, scenario or situation that is being played out, reveals the content of the message, which as I said, could be related to an unfulfilled need in your life or to some other issue which requires attention. You now need to ask yourself how the activity in your dream can be applied (metaphorically) or related (symbolically) to your present situation. For instance, a scene involving travel could be a call for change, or the broadening of your boundaries and the opening of your mind. A battle or conflict in your dream could be referring to a similar situation within yourself. Any threatening situation may be a warning of a matter that urgently needs to be resolved, something which is a real threat to your mental well-being or inner peace.

The persons and images in your dream

The next dimension involves the actual images, characters and objects that were presented. In terms of Gestalt psychology, every object or person (character) in a dream represents a certain aspect of yourself and you will need to ask yourself what aspect of your personality the figure represented. Look at the attributes of the characters involved. Were they large or small, aggressive or loving, threatening or supportive? For example, a poor, abused and helpless child could suggest your wounded 'inner child'. A richly dressed, opulent figure could symbolically point to abundance or a desire for riches, depending on the context and what actions are taking place. For example, a fight with another figure in your dream could be pointing to a conflict within yourself that needs to be resolved.

Symbolic objects in your dream

Finally, consider each object that appeared in your dream. Each will have a particular symbolic significance and add detail to the final meaning of your dream. Objects can often be interpreted in terms of their practical uses or effects in everyday life and applied (metaphorically) to your present situation or path in life. For instance, a large boulder on your path would suggest an obstacle to be overcome and a crossroads, a decision to be made. Once again, the guideline is to consider what you will need to do in real life when confronted with such a situation or object and re-phrase the answer in a metaphorical form.

The final meaning

To unlock the final meaning and message of the dream, you will need to learn to link and combine the information obtained from each level or dimension of symbols, into an integrated whole. This is a straightforward process which involves applying your knowledge and reasoning. However, those of you who are skilled in intuition could also learn to 'sense' the meaning of dream-scenes, activities, characters and objects with practice.

No Title VII protection for illegal immigrants - Business Management ...

Employers can?t discriminate against someone based on her? national origin. But what about discrimination based on whether someone is in the country illegally? Is that also national-origin discrimination?

The answer is a resounding ?No!? according to a recent 7th Circuit Court of Appeals case.

Recent case: Kristi met and married a Mexican citizen who was in the United States illegally. Then, she got a job at a bank. When her Mexican husband wanted to start his own business, he got a federal individual tax identification number. With Kristi?s help, he opened two accounts at the bank: a personal account and a business one.

The business failed and he decided to return to Mexico, where he was going to try to get a legitimate visa based on his marriage to a U.S. citizen. Kristi asked for two weeks off so she could visit her husband in Mexico. That?s when bank managers discovered she was married to a Mexican citizen, whom she acknowledged had been an illegal immigrant when she set up the accounts. Kristi was subsequently fired after the bank feared fraud.

She sued, alleging she had really been fired for associating with a Mexican.

The court didn?t see it that way. If anything, it said she was fired for associating with an illegal alien who happened to be Mexi??can.

He could have been any other nationality, but his immigration status was the factor that led to her discharge. Because Title VII doesn?t prohibit discrimination based on being in the country illegally, she had no case. (Cortezano v. Salin Bank & Trust, No. 11-1631, 7th Cir., 2012)

Final note: Don?t forget that illegal immigrants can sue for unpaid overtime and minimum wage for work performed in the past. They just can?t be reinstated.

JENNIFER ANISTON - JENNIFER ANISTON AND JUSTIN THEROUX WANT DIFFERENT STYLES FOR WEDDING

The acting couple have different destinations and budgets for their nuptials.

Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux both want different things for their wedding.

The couple recently announced their engagement, and while he bride-to-be would love to marry abroad, the groom is hoping for their nuptials to take place close to home.

A source claimed the former 'Friends' actress wants a ''destination wedding, kind of like eloping with a few friends. There will be The Feeling of a vacation, since that's their favorite thing to do.''

However actor/screenwriter Justin has other ideas.

The insider told website UsMagazine.com: ''Justin wants a New York City winter wedding.''

The tone and theme of their future nuptials is also a source of contention. Although 43-year-old Jennifer will want to ''celebrate in high style,'' the friend explained: ''Justin isn't as flashy as the men she's been with in the past, so it won't go too over-the-top.''

Though they disagree over the details, in the end, both stars are thrilled to be taking this next step together.

A source says of the 'Horrible Bosses' star, who divorced Brad Pitt in 2005: ''Jen is over the moon about her second chance at a happy marriage. Justin is giving her a solid vow to love.''

It will be the first marriage for 41-year-old Justin, who split from longtime love Heidi Bivens in early 2011 after 14 years together.
